Vegetable Steamed DimSim/ Dumplings/ Momos and Chutney (Chilly Sauce)

Recipe: Vegetable  Steamed DimSim/ Dumplings/ Momos 

You may know this dish as a Momos, Dumplings, Dimsum or Bao, but its always been favorite by many of us. Originating from Tibet, this dish is a hugely popular street food in many country, especially in North-India. This is indeed a versatile food, which is available from vegetable to meat, which means the possibilities for an experience with this dish are endless. Making momos  is considered to be a little tough and time taking process, but this shared recipe won't take long and taste as an original one.  I have made this with the available veggies, you can always create your own signature stuffing with either with chicken, or more like veggies, soya, cottage cheese (paneer) or whatever your heart fancies!

Ingredients 

(For the Dough)
  • 150 gms all purpose flour
  • 1/4 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • Water (for kneading)

(For the Vegetarian Filling)
  • 1 cup cabbage and carrots, grated
  • 2 tbsp onions , finely chopped
  • Handful spring onion, Chopped
  • 1/2 tsp garlic, finely chopped
  • 1 tbsp oil
  • 1/4 tsp vinegar
  • Salt and pepper to taste 
(For Chilli Sauce)
  • 3-5 garlic cloves, peeled
  • 6 pieces whole red chilies ( dry or fresh)
  • 1 Tomato
  • 1 tbsp white sesame seeds
  • Salt to taste

Method for preparing Momos

  • Heat a pan and add garlic and sauté for 30 seconds.
  • Now add all the ingredients of the vegetable filling, you may add more veggies according to your choice and sauté for 3-4 mins. Add salt & pepper to taste and keep this mixture to cool.

  • Knead the refined flour by mixing baking powder and salt together into firm dough. Cover and keep aside for 30 minutes.
  • Roll the dough into very thin 4-5 inch rounds.
  • Take each round piece and place some filling in the center.

  • Lift one side of the edge and start pleating and bring the edges together and twist to seal it.

  • Steam in a steamer for about 10- 15 minutes and serve hot with Chilly sauce, Mayonnaise Or ketchup . If you wish to make chilly sauce, the recipe is just a scroll away.

Prepare Chilli Sauce:

  • Soak 5-6 red chilies into warm water for about two hours.You can also use dry red chilies to soak in absence of red fresh chilies. 
  • Cut 2-3 small pieces of garlic and  a tomato and put all the ingredients in a mixie jar and grind to a smooth paste.Add salt and sesame seeds and serve it with Momos.
